Reading about the Knicks and Spurs game last night, I swear it felt like 1999 all over again. For those of you not familiar or too lazy to wiki '99, this was the lockout shortened awkward season between the golden Jordan era, and the dynasty Lakers years when a baby-faced Tim Duncan went up against an equally youthful but way rowdier Marcus Camby.
This was probably one of the roughest lookin Knicks squads who went into the playoffs as the 8th seed in the East. After beating the top-seeded Zo and Timmy Hardaway Heat, they swepts the Hawks and then took down the Pacers. This team was 24th out of the 27 teams in offense, but they were 4th in overall defense Think of the 2007 'Believe' Warriors, but with more beards and flagrant fouls.
The spurs squad was led by the who's who of calm old guys: Sean Elliot, Dave Robinson and of course the young big funduncanmentals. Although they are the visiting team in the clip below, the Spurs were always this calm, no matter the circumstances, especially during this first championship run.
Since the Spurs went ahead and ended the dream for new yorkers that year (Spurs won in 5, 4-1), I hope Chris Dudley and kobe's best friend, Chris Childs were sharing a brew and exchanging high-fives last night for how Ray Felton and Carmelo Anthony soundly beat the Spurs on their home court. It isn't be the sweet revenge of getting Pat his championship, but at least for one night longer, the Knicks are on top in the NBA.
Enjoy the golden pipes of Mike Walczewski.
